My great grandfather George Davey

Any words linked will take you to full biographies of that person including photos and links to other sources such as newspapers.

Neither my mother Phyllis born 1934 nor her older sister Margaret ever met their grandfather George.

George was born 1 June 1865 in the district of Evandale but was not named on the birth record. George had 11 siblings and lived with his parents John and Annie Davey.

George married  Martha Colgrave in 1890. He was nearly 10 years older than her. But the Colgrave and Davey families were neighbours in the areas of Blessington, English Town, Deddington and Nile where most of the siblings lived.

George and Martha had 12 children of which one was my grandmother Hannah. The youngest child was Frederick who was born just one month before George died.

According to his death notice, George died in Launceston Hospital on 2 November 1914. His last will and testament was dated 29 October  just four days before he died. I wonder if he had been ill and whilst in hospital decided to write his will with everything going to his wife Martha.

George is buried at St Andrew’s Cemetery in Evandale. This used to be known as the Presbyterian burial ground. Also buried with George are two of his daughters, Elsie and Leila, who died before him as well as his wife who died 40 years later in 1954.

Family photo box

A few years ago,  I was given a Christmas present inside a lovely cube shaped box. Instead of throwing out the box, I wondered what I could use it for.

I decided that would be a good box to use to keep my family photos in.

Now as the family historian, I get given lots of photos. Some are black and white, others are sepia, recent ones are in colour. Some are very small, others a lot larger. Some are in cardboard frames, others are just the photo. But this little box would hold photos that were up to postcard size.

I must have nearly 200 photos in the box and the majority have been digitized. These are then put in folders and saved under Surname First name Year Event.

The photos are mainly from my mother’s side of the family as both her and her sister gave me lots of the photos and were able to name who was in them. I think there are only about 20 photos from my father’s side of the family.

The largest photo which is black and white, you can see is slightly curled and is of my brother and I when we were young.

NaGenWriMo 2022

I have heard of NaNoWriMo which is National Novel Writing Month but on some genealogy feeds I follow, I found there is something similar for genealogists.

This is called NaGenWriMo and Taralyn Parker has written a post about what is involved.

I have decided I am going to post one of my family history photos each day with a bit of a story about each.  I will also include dates of BDM for some of my direct ancestors. These posts wont be like my long researched biographies but just a few short paragraphs with a photo.

Readers: Are you going to take part in NaGenWriMo 2022?

Leave comment below with link to your blog so I can visit or follow for the month.

Below you will see links to each of the posts I publish as part of NaGenWriMo 2022.
